Once back at home, it was wonderful to be reunited with my family. My mother had done a great job looking after the kids and getting Ruaraidh back to health. She had struggled to keep the house as tidy as she knew I fastidiously liked it but that didn’t matter – she had done her best and I was home. The children were excited to see me and were impressed with my medal, which they passed between them. However, they didn’t seem remotely interested in the race or my experience, except to ask, ‘Did you see a camel?’ They were bursting to tell me what they had been up and I absolutely loved hearing all their news and to see Ruaraidh was on the mend. Tim was delighted when I called him on his fishing trip to tell him I had done it. He seemed relieved as if he was thinking, Well, that’s that. Mimi has achieved her goal and now she can hang up her trainers and return to being a full-time wife and mother. But I felt I had been on a life-changing journey; how could I just go back to normal?

The following day, I had to do just that as I spent the entire morning catching up on the housework. As I sat recovering with a cup of coffee at the kitchen table, I couldn’t believe what a difference a couple of days could make. This time last week, I had been an ultra-warrior, drinking my coffee outside a tent as the sun rose over the desert and about to embark on a gruelling run. Now I was back to being a housewife, looking at grey skies over the garden shed with just the ironing to tackle later. It almost felt as though the MDS had all been a dream. I had been on such an extraordinary adventure, but back at home, everyone else had carried on as before. Apart from Max and Louise, no one really understood what I had been through in the past week – the joyful highs, the painful lows and pushing my body past the brink of exhaustion. I still couldn’t quite believe what I had achieved. I had completed the toughest footrace on earth, despite being ill and with the extra stress of my son being hospitalised in the build-up. If I could finish in those circumstances, what could I do when I was in top physical and mental health? It was a question I definitely wanted answered. It wasn’t enough that I had done the MDS against the odds. I wanted to see what else I could achieve. The MDS hadn’t got ultrarunning ‘out of my system’ as Tim had thought – it had ignited a passion for it. I wasn’t going to give it up now. This was only the beginning.
